چکیده

We use deep panchromatic data sets in the GOODS-N field, from GALEX to the deepest Herschel far-infrared (FIR) and VLA radio continuum imaging, to explore the evolution of star-formation activity and dust attenuation properties of star-forming galaxies to z; 4, using mass-complete samples. Our main results can be summarized as follows: (i) the slope of the star-formation rate–M* correlation is consistent with being constant ;0.8 up to z; 1.5, while its normalization keeps increasing with redshift; (ii) for the first time we are able to explore the FIR–radio correlation for a mass-selected sample of star-forming galaxies: the correlation does not evolve up to z; 4; (iii) we confirm that galaxy stellar mass is a robust proxy for UV dust attenuation in star-forming galaxies, with more massive galaxies being more dust attenuated. Strikingly, we find that this attenuation relation evolves very weakly with redshift, with the amount of dust attenuation increasing by less than 0.3 mag over the redshift range [0.5–4] for a fixed stellar mass; (iv) the correlation between dust attenuation and the UV spectral slope evolves with redshift, with the median UV slope becoming bluer with redshift. By z; 3, typical UV slopes are inconsistent, given the measured dust attenuations, with the predictions of commonly used empirical laws. (v) Finally, building on existing results, we show that gas reddening is marginally larger (by a factor of around 1.3) than the stellar reddening at all redshifts probed. Our results support a scenario where the ISM conditions of typical star-forming galaxies evolve with redshift, such that at z ⩾ 1.5 Main Sequence galaxies have ISM conditions moving closer to those of local starbursts.

FIR colours and SEDs of nearby galaxies observed with Herschel*

We present infrared colours (in the 25−500 μm spectral range) and UV to radio continuum spectral energy distributions of a sample of 51 nearby galaxies observed with SPIRE on Herschel. The observed sample includes all morphological classes, from quiescent ellipticals to active starbursts. Active galaxies have warmer colour temperatures than normal spirals. In ellipticals hosting a radio galaxy,...

L etter to the E ditor Herschel ? PEP / HerMES : On the redshift evolution ( 0 ≤ z ≤ 4 ) of dust attenuation and of the total ( UV + IR ) star formation rate density

Context. Using new homogeneous Luminosity Functions (LFs) in the FUV (VVDS) and in the FIR Herschel/PEP and Herschel/HerMES, we study the evolution of the dust attenuation with redshift. With this information in hand, we are able to estimate the redshift evolution of the total (FUV + FIR) star formation rate density (SFRDTOT). By integrating SFRDTOT, we follow the mass building and analyze the ...

A multiwavelength analysis of the clumpy FIR–bright sources in M33

We present a multiwavelength study of a sample of far-infrared (FIR) sources detected on the Herschel broad–band maps of the nearby galaxy M33. We perform source photometry on the FIR maps as well as mid-infrared (MIR), Hα, far-ultraviolet and integrated HI and CO line emission maps. By fitting MIR/FIR dust emission spectra, the source dust masses, temperatures and luminosities are inferred. Th...

The temperature dependence of the far-infrared–radio correlation in the Herschel-ATLAS

We use 10,387 galaxies from the Herschel Astrophysical TeraHertz Large Area Survey (HATLAS) to probe the far-infrared radio correlation (FIRC) of star forming galaxies as a function of redshift, wavelength, and effective dust temperature. All of the sources in our 250μmselected sample have spectroscopic redshifts, as well as 1.4 GHz flux density estimates measured from the Faint Images of the R...

Star Formation and Dust Obscuration at Z ≈ 2: Galaxies at the Dawn of Downsizing*

We present first results of a study aimed to constrain the star formation rate and dust content of galaxies at z≈2. We use a sample of BzK-selected star-forming galaxies, drawn from the COSMOS survey, to perform a stacking analysis of their 1.4 GHz radio continuum as a function of different stellar population properties, after removing AGN contaminants from the sample. Dust unbiased star format...
